Legend has it that Yoritomo's horse was healed here in 1180: the bath is called ‘出陣風呂’.
According to local legend, in 1180 Minamoto no Yoritomo, fleeing after the defeat at Ishibashiyama, treated his horse Hagoromo here by soaking its injured leg in a spring; the bath at the Chikurakan ryokan still bears the name ‘Shutsujin-buro’ (bath of departure for battle) in memory of the episode. The modern springs in the area were drilled from 1954 onwards.
Chikura Onsen is considered the oldest group of hot springs in Chiba, with sulphurous water at the historic source and, since 1954, other chloride springs drilled in the Minamibōsō area.
