Buried here are 1,800 Commonwealth soldiers who died as prisoners in Japan.
On the three hectares of the former Hodogaya amusement park, requisitioned by the occupation forces in 1946, about 1,800 Commonwealth servicemen are buried: Britons, Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders, Indians and Pakistanis who died as prisoners of war in Japan during the Second World War, plus some post-war burials. The ground is divided by nationality, with white headstones lined up on well-kept lawns: it is the only cemetery of this kind in Japan.
A war cemetery established in 1946 by the Allied occupation forces, the only one of its kind in Japan, dedicated to Commonwealth servicemen who died as prisoners of war.
