Eight hundred plum trees of eighty varieties, in bloom between mid-February and early March.
The plum grove lies within the grounds and has about eight hundred trees of eighty varieties, white and red mixed together, which open in succession over a good month. During the festival the shrine museum brings out the objects left by Sugawara no Michizane, which can only be seen then.
Founded in 948 and dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, in the plain of the Furuichi kofun, the burial mounds of the rulers. The name comes from the Dōmyō-ji temple that stood beside it.
ℹ️ You can enter the grounds freely; for the plum grove you leave a contribution of 300 yen, free up to junior high. The plum festival in 2026 runs from 7 February to 12 March. The exhibition of Michizane's objects is paid for separately, 300 yen for adults and 100 for elementary school children.
