The first lighthouse, by the Frenchman Verny in 1870, collapsed in 1923 and was rebuilt to a different design.
On the western tip of Jōgashima Island, at the end of the Miura Peninsula, a white lighthouse marks the entrance to Tokyo Bay from the open sea. The first one, designed by the French engineer Léonce Verny and completed in 1870, collapsed entirely in the 1923 Kantō earthquake; the present one, rebuilt in 1926, has a different shape from the original. From the headland around it, on clear days, you can see the Bōsō Peninsula, Mount Fuji and even Izu Ōshima.
