The Man'yōshū (eighth century) already mentions it: over 1,300 years of documented hot spring history.
If you bathe at Futsukaichi Onsen today, you use the same hot spring water that the Man'yōshū (the oldest poetry anthology in Japan, compiled in the eighth century) already called ‘湯の原’ (yu no hara, ‘the plain of hot water’). Over the centuries the town has also borne the names 次田の湯, 薬師の湯, 西府の湯 and then 武蔵温泉, before taking its present name in the Shōwa period (1926–1989).
Futsukaichi Onsen is a hot spring resort in the municipality of Chikushino, with over 1,300 years of documented history, starting from its mention in the Man'yōshū.
