The water in the pond rises and falls with the tide of the bay. Admission 300 yen.

The pond is not fed by a spring but by the sea: it takes its water from the bay and rises and falls with it, so the level you see depends on the time of day. On the water stands the Nakajima teahouse.

It began in 1654, when the younger brother of the fourth shogun, Ietsuna (the shogun was the military ruler who governed the country in place of the emperor), had part of the tidal flat filled in and built a residence on it. After passing to the imperial family, it was given to the city and opened to the public in April 1946. It covers 250,165 square metres, with 6,077 tall trees.

ℹ️ Open 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. Closed from 29 December to 1 January. Admission 300 yen, 150 for over-65s.
