An obā planted two hydrangeas: today it ranks 6th among the 30 best gardens in western Japan.
The slope turns blue between mid-May and late June, when thousands of hydrangeas bloom all at once over about a hectare in the heart of the Motobu Peninsula. If you arrive early in the morning you find them still wet with dew; the café on site serves themed sweets for those who stop to look at them from above.
The garden began with just two hydrangea plants set in the ground by an elderly local woman (obā, ‘grandma’ in Okinawan). It has grown over the years, and today it is ranked sixth among the thirty best hydrangea gardens in western Japan (寄稿: 本部町観光協会). It is a private garden, open to the public only in the flowering season.
ℹ️ Open only from mid-May to late June, every day 9:00–18:30 (or until sunset), with no closing days in the season. Adult ticket 400 yen, groups 350, disabled visitors 300, according to the garden's official website. Free car park for 40 cars and 5 buses. Out of season it stays closed: it is not a lawn you can come and see in other months.
