Thirteen million years of erosion; the ropeway has run without a single accident since 1963.
Rain and wind have carved the volcanic rock for about thirteen million years, sculpting pinnacles and cliffs that earn Kankakei the title of one of the three most beautiful gorges in Japan, in the Seto Inland Sea National Park. The ropeway climbs in five minutes with 40-person cabins and, according to the operator, has never had an accident: it is the only one in Japan with a view of sky, sea and gorge at once.
A gorge on the island of Shōdoshima, a scenic destination all year round: fresh green in spring, red leaves in autumn, snow in winter. The ropeway that crosses it has been running since 1963.
ℹ️ Hiking trails always open and free. Ropeway open all year with seasonal hours (roughly 8:00/8:30–17:00, shorter in December–March), return ticket from 2,160 to 2,700 yen depending on the period. Free car park at both stations; wheelchair access only from the summit station.
