The only Sumatran elephants in Japan: two of them, among 100 species and 1,000 animals.
The park's Asian zone is home to Aswatama and Ida, the only two Sumatran elephants kept in captivity in Japan: a critically endangered subspecies, with barely two thousand left in the wild on Sumatra. In all, the park has about 100 species and 1,000 animals, including white tigers, lions, reticulated giraffes, white rhinoceroses and red pandas, which you can see from your own car or on dedicated buses that let you feed herbivores and carnivores from the windows. Besides the safari zone there is a bird park with a flight show and an amusement park area.
Set in the hills of Tomioka, Gunma Safari Park is one of the largest safari parks in Japan, with themed zones for Africa, Asia and Japan that you can drive through in your own car or tour on the park's buses. It is known above all for its pair of Sumatran elephants, a critically endangered subspecies kept only here in the country, and for a large collection of white tigers. The park combines the drive-through safari experience with a walk-through area that includes a bird park and a family entertainment section.
