1.7 million finds beneath two hundred metres of street in a reconstructed samurai town.

Two hundred metres of street in the reconstructed district have brought back, since 1995 and on an archaeological basis, the samurai houses, shops and temples of a town that lay buried for four centuries. The complex also includes the mountain castle at 473 metres and four gardens designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, while the museum next door holds 1.7 million finds excavated from the site.

Capital of the Asakura family's domain for a century, it was burned and abandoned in 1573 after the defeat by Oda Nobunaga, and lay under the fields until the archaeological excavations of the twentieth century. It was designated a Special Historic Site in 1971, with four of its gardens designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1991 and over 2,343 finds declared an Important Cultural Property in 2007: a triple designation that is rare for a single site.

ℹ️ Museum open 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed on Mondays and over the year-end and New Year period. Adult ticket 700 yen (high school 400, elementary/junior high 200, over-70s 350); ‘Asamyu-pass’ annual pass 1,800 yen. The reconstructed district is a 3-minute walk from Ichijōdani Station (Kominato Line from Fukui, 15 minutes) or can be reached by bus from Fukui Station; free shuttle at weekends from April to November. Car park for 140 cars and 10 buses.
