For ten days or so at New Year it is the first point on the mainland to see the sunrise.

The easternmost cape of the Kantō faces the Pacific with rocky cliffs where the sea breaks hard all year round. You can climb the white lighthouse, about 31 metres tall: the spiral staircase has 99 steps, like the miles of nearby Kujūkuri, and from the top you can see the sea on three sides.

Inubōsaki Lighthouse, first lit in 1874 to a design by the British engineer Richard Henry Brunton, is one of the 50 historic lighthouses of Japan. Excluding mountain peaks and remote islands, the cape is the point on the Japanese mainland where the early morning sun arrives first, for a short period around the winter solstice.

ℹ️ The cape area is accessible at all times. Climbing the lighthouse costs 300 yen and is not allowed on very windy days (source: research compiled from several tourist websites and the Japan lighthouse project).
