49 inhabitants in 2016: Okayama city's only inhabited island, 8 minutes away by ferry.
An island of 0.54 km² with 3.6 km of coastline, the south-easternmost point of Okayama and its only inhabited island: in September 2016 it had 49 residents, a number in steady decline, and many abandoned houses. The Akebono-maru ferry links it 6–7 times a day with Hōden port in about 8 minutes. The copper refinery, active from 1907 to 1919 and closed for good in 1932, now houses a museum; other houses in the village host the installations of the Art House Project.
It is part of the Setouchi Triennale island network together with Naoshima and Teshima.
ℹ️ Reachable only by ferry from Hōden; a few hours are enough to walk round the island.
