0.14 km² in the middle of the lake, with a temple and a shrine that share the island.

A thirty-to-forty-minute ferry from Nagahama, Imazu or Hikone takes you to an island of just 0.14 km² and 197 metres at its highest point, occupied almost entirely by Hōgon-ji temple (the thirtieth stop on the Saigoku pilgrimage) and Tsukubusuma Shrine, once a single complex before the forced separation of Buddhism and Shinto in the Meiji era. Among the properties preserved there are the temple's karamon and the main building of the shrine, both National Treasures.

Island in Lake Biwa, administratively part of Nagahama, historic seat of a Buddhist-Shinto religious complex.

ℹ️ Ferry: about 35 min from Nagahama, 30 from Imazu, 40 from Hikone (Biwako Kisen or Ōmi Marine depending on the pier). Admission to the temple/shrine 600 yen adults, 300 yen children.
