An isolated 1,721 m volcano rising from the sea, nicknamed ‘Rishiri Fuji’.
Arriving by ferry, you see Mount Rishiri, 1,721 metres, rising straight out of the sea with no lesser hills around it, a conical outline that has earned it the nickname ‘Rishiri Fuji’. The island, 182 km² and the eighteenth largest in Japan, is divided between two towns, one for each side of the mountain.
The island is a single volcanic edifice surrounded by the Sea of Japan, off the north coast of Hokkaido. The administrative division between the towns of Rishiri and Rishirifuji follows the volcano's watershed, one side each.
ℹ️ The island is connected by ferry to Wakkanai. Check the timetable and the length of the crossing on the company's website.
