A funicular with a 42° gradient goes down in 5 minutes to the hot bath on the river.
To reach the bath you do not go down a staircase: you board a funicular inclined at 42 degrees, set into the wall of the gorge, and in five minutes you arrive at the edge of the Iya River. The water, highly alkaline and called the ‘smooth-skin bath’ (美肌の湯), flows continuously (源泉掛け流し) right beside the current, with the mountain gorge rising steeply overhead.
Hot spring in the municipality of Miyoshi, reached from the hotel above by a private funicular cut into the side of the Iya Valley. The outdoor bath on the river is one of the most photographed attractions in the area for its combination of hot bath and steep gorge.
