43.65 metres: the tallest stone lighthouse in Japan, lit since 1903 and still in use.
On the cliff at the western tip of the Shimane Peninsula, the lighthouse reaches 43.65 metres from base to top (the tallest stone-masonry lighthouse in Japan), with a double inner structure in brick and an outer facing of white stone quarried at Mihonoseki. Lit in 1903, its 480,000-candela light reaches about 40 km out to sea and is still in service after more than a century.
Built in 1903 on Cape Hinomisaki, municipality of Izumo. Included in 1998 among the ‘hundred historic lighthouses of the world’ and designated an Important Cultural Property in 2022.
ℹ️ You can climb inside for a fee; opening hours vary with the season. Next to the Hinomisaki-jinja shrine.
