Twenty-three 1954 houses for USAF personnel are now rented out as cafés and shops.

You walk among single-storey houses with gabled roofs and painted wooden boards, built in 1954 for the staff of the American Johnson Air Base (now JASDF Iruma Air Base). The neighbourhood covers about 25,000 m² and has some fifty shops, cafés and restaurants inside the old military houses; 23 of them, together with a few pre-war officers' residences, are still rented out just as they are.

After the base was returned in 1978, the neighbourhood was kept and rented out instead of being demolished: today it mixes the original military houses with newer buildings in a similar style, all managed as rental properties by the same owner.

ℹ️ The streets and alleys are always accessible, as it is a lived-in neighbourhood. Individual shops and cafés have their own hours, generally daytime; some close one day a week.
