Active since the Tenshō era, over 430 years ago: it opens at 6:30 and is closed only on Wednesdays.
Stalls of freshly caught fish, mountain vegetables and preserved products cover the street every morning except Wednesdays. It is one of the ‘three great morning markets of Japan’, together with those of Wajima (Ishikawa) and Takayama/Miyagawa (Gifu), and many of the stalls pass from generation to generation within the same family.
The market dates back to the Tenshō era (1573–1592): the municipality of Katsuura dates it to more than 430 years ago; other sources give 1591 as the precise year, on the initiative of the lord of the local castle. In 1987 it moved to its current site.
ℹ️ Every day except Wednesdays and 1 January, about 6:30–11:00. From the 1st to the 15th of the month it is held on Shimohonchō Street, from the 16th to the end of the month on Nakahonchō Street (source: city.katsuura.lg.jp).
