Of Japan's three great wooden torii, the red one here dates from 1645 and has held out since '45.
An ancient leading shrine (ichinomiya) of Echizen Province, dedicated to seven deities, with an imperial rank that goes back to before the Meiji period. Its great vermilion torii, about 11 metres high and completed in 1645, is counted among Japan's three great wooden torii together with those of Itsukushima and Kasuga, and has been an Important Cultural Property since 1950. Having survived the 1945 air raids on Tsuruga, which destroyed most of the shrine's other buildings, it remains the symbol of the city today.
A Shinto shrine in the centre of Tsuruga, one of the most important on the Sea of Japan coast.
ℹ️ Open grounds, accessible at all times; the shrine office keeps its own hours for amulets and blessings.
