Two separate entrances, for patients and for guests: Kido Takayoshi's father was the clan doctor, and this is the house where Kido was born in 1833.
Birthplace of Kido Takayoshi (Katsura Kogorō), one of the ‘three great heroes’ of the Meiji Restoration along with Ōkubo Toshimichi and Saigō Takamori. It is a two-storey wooden building with a tiled roof and 12–14 rooms; because Kido's father was a doctor of the Chōshū domain, the house has two separate entrances, one for patients and one for the family's guests. Kido was born here in 1833 and lived here for about twenty years, until he moved to Edo. On display inside are calligraphy from his youth, photographs and documents relating to his doctor father; volunteer guides are always present to give explanations.
A historic house in the centre of Hagi, among the city's most visited sights together with Shōka Sonjuku and the castle ruins. It is a separate building, with its own ticket, distinct from Shōin Shrine and the Horiuchi district.
ℹ️ Hours 9:00–17:00, admission 100 yen. No weekly closing day appears in the official source consulted; to be checked on site. On foot: 25 minutes from JR Higashi-Hagi Station; by car: 20 minutes from the Edo exit of the Ogori-Hagi Road.
