The oracle slip is bought blank: the words appear when you dip it in the spring-water basin.

The entrance stairway is what people photograph: two rows of red lanterns on stone steps, under the trees. At the top, at the spring-water basin, you dip the oracle slip you bought blank and the words appear on contact with the water. In summer the valley is considerably cooler than the city centre.

A shrine dedicated to water, at the end of a narrow valley north of Kyoto. From 1 July to 15 August the bamboo decorations of the star festival stay lit from sunset until 20:00.

ℹ️ Free admission, open all year; the main hall is open 6:00–20:00 from 1 May to 30 November, and on the first three days of the year until 20:00. ⚠️ By train, not by car: from ‘Kibuneguchi’ station on the Eizan railway the road is two kilometres of narrow carriageway with no pavement, about half an hour on foot; Kyoto Bus route 33 covers the last stretch and then it is five minutes. In high season there is a half-hour queue at the entrance. ⚠️ For 2026 the shrine announces extraordinary traffic restrictions in the Kibune area, with a notice dated 31 July 2026: the content of the notice could not be opened, so dates, times and bans still need to be read before planning a day here.
