Five million red spider lilies bloom in September–October on the bend of the Koma River.

It takes its name from the shape of its river bend, which resembles a drawstring purse (巾着) pulled tight by the Koma River. It is known for the largest bloom of manjushage (曼珠沙華, red spider lily, Lycoris radiata) in Japan: about 5 million flowers, which turn the whole field red from mid-September to early October, like a carpet spread over the ground; the plant flowers without leaves, a botanical rarity. The 2026 festival (巾着田曼珠沙華まつり) has been announced as running from 21 September to 6 October, with evening illuminations on five dates (24, 25, 28, 29 and 30 September, 18:00–20:00).

Riverside park managed by the city of Hidaka, a day-trip destination from Tokyo (nearest station: Koma, Seibu Ikebukuro Line, about 15 minutes on foot from the field).

ℹ️ Park office open 8:00–17:00, closed 29 December–3 January. During the festival: entry ¥500, free below junior high school age; festival hours 9:00–16:30. Updates on the bloom via an automated telephone message from September to mid-October. Tel. 042-982-0268.
