Tacorice was born here in 1984: today it still costs 400 yen, one minute from Camp Hansen.
Gibo Matsuzō was working at Parlor Senri, one metre from the gate of Camp Hansen, when in 1984 he put the taco meat on rice instead of in the tortilla: that was the birth of tacorice. The following year King Tacos opened, carrying on the recipe, and it is now shop number one of a small chain. The basic dish still costs 400 yen.
Kin is a small town shaped by the American military presence (the main gate of Camp Hansen is one minute's walk away). In 1984 Gibo Matsuzō, of the nearby Parlor Senri, invented tacorice to feed the young marines cheaply. King Tacos opened in 1985 right in front of the base and became its go-to shop; today it is a small chain with several branches on the island, but this is still the original shop.
ℹ️ Open every day 10:30–21:00. Basic tacorice 400 yen, with cheese 500, with cheese and vegetables 600. Car park on site.
