Two hundred metres of cliffs for eight kilometres: you go down 736 steps to the sea.
Called the ‘Alps of the sea’, the cliffs dropping sheer into the Pacific run for about eight kilometres at around two hundred metres high, seen from three viewpoints in sequence. From the first you can go down seven hundred and thirty-six steps almost to water level, to look at the cliff faces from below instead of from above. A boat also leaves from Shimanokoshi and goes round under the cliffs in fifty minutes, with seagulls coming close for food.
A stretch of uplifted rocky coast in the municipality of Tanohata, within Sanriku Reconstruction National Park, among the best-known scenic spots on the Sanriku coast.
ℹ️ Access and viewpoints free, always open. The boat from Shimanokoshi (8 minutes' walk from Shimanokoshi Station on the Sanriku Railway) has its own seasonal timetable and a separate ticket.
