In the lobby, the triple pillar found in 2000: three trunks bound together, 1.35 m across.
Opened in 2007 next to Izumo Taisha, the museum displays in the centre of the entrance hall the ‘Uzubashira’, the base of a pillar found in 2000 under the shrine forecourt: three cedar trunks bound together to a diameter of about 1.35 metres, dated to the early Kamakura period and interpreted as the support of an ancient honden much taller than the present one. The galleries also reconstruct the ritual and archaeological history of the Izumo region.
Prefectural museum opened on 10 March 2007 beside Izumo Taisha, municipality of Izumo.
ℹ️ About 5 minutes on foot from Izumo Taisha. ⚠️ Closed for works from 1 April 2025, reopening expected in October 2026: check its status before including it in a short-term itinerary.
