The five-storey pagoda is under scaffolding until 2034: its first restoration in 120 years.

The five-storey pagoda, among the best-known images of Nara, is now wrapped in the scaffolding of its first major restoration in 120 years, scheduled to run until 2034. Next to it, the Chūkondō, the main hall rebuilt in 2018, exactly reproduces the dimensions of the lost building: 37 by 23 metres, and 21 metres high.

The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara’, inscribed in 1998. Both the five-storey pagoda and the statue of Ashura, a Buddhist deity kept in the temple museum, the Kokuhōkan, are National Treasures.

ℹ️ Open 9:00–17:00. The Kokuhōkan museum costs 900 yen, the Chūkondō and the Tōkondō 500 yen each separately, or 1,600 yen for the combined ticket. Five minutes' walk from Kintetsu Nara Station.
