The stage reopened on 21 August 2026, almost a month after the earthquake of 28 July.
It is the official home of Kumamon, the director-mascot of Kumamoto Prefecture and perhaps the most famous promotional character in Japan: free admission, capacity 80 people (45 for the stage show), a live performance almost every day. After the earthquake of 28 July 2026 the venue reopened on 30 July, but the shows remained suspended; Kumamon himself resumed public appearances on 16 August, and the regular stage show at Kumamon Square returned on 21 August, almost a month after the quake.
Kumamon Square occupies the ground floor of the Tetoria Kumamoto Building, in the city centre, and is the public operations centre of Kumamon, the character created in 2010 by Kumamoto Prefecture for the promotional campaign tied to the arrival of the Kyūshū shinkansen: from there he became one of the most recognised yuru-kyara (local mascots) in Japan. The space has a stage for the almost daily performances, three augmented-reality games on a big screen, a photo spot and a shop/café with themed goods and ingredients from the prefecture. The earthquake of 28 July 2026 (M7.1) interrupted its activities: the venue reopened on 30 July, but with damage judged limited and the shows suspended until, on 21 August, the regular stage show returned, after Kumamon had already resumed public appearances elsewhere from 16 August.
ℹ️ Open 10:00–19:00 (10:00–17:00 during reduced-hours periods). Closed on Tuesdays and during the year-end/New Year period. Free admission; capacity 80 people in general, about 45 to watch the stage show. You check the times of Kumamon's performances on the calendar of the official site kumamon-land.jp: they are not fixed. ⚠️ As of 21 August 2026 the regular programme had only just resumed after the earthquake: before a trip, check that there are no new suspensions.
