It stands opposite Takijiri-oji, one of the five major oji (王子, the waypoint shrines that marked the pilgrims' route) and the gateway to the Nakahechi route, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. It displays finds excavated in the oji area itself and the diary of a court pilgrimage in which the poet Fujiwara no Teika took part. If you want a photo in costume, you can put on a Heian robe for a fee before setting off on the trail.
Built as the information point for the Nakahechi route of the Kumano pilgrimage trail, opposite Takijiri-oji, a National Historic Site since 2000. It is still the most used starting point for tackling the climb towards Takahara and the Kumano shrines on foot.
