Thirty historic buildings restored with a focus on glass: 2 million visitors a year.
The name comes from the former National Bank No. 130, completed in 1899 and known for its dark walls: it was at risk of demolition when, in 1988, the municipality of Nagahama and eight private companies founded the ‘Kurokabe’ company to turn it into a glass museum instead of yet another shopping centre. Glass, a craft with no historical roots in Nagahama, was chosen deliberately so as not to compete with the local shops already there. Today thirty numbered historic buildings carry the same brand, and every year the neighbourhood receives about two thousand visits from administrators from all over Japan who study the model.
Nagahama neighbourhood revitalised since 1988 around a former bank building from 1899, now specialising in art and craft glass.
ℹ️ Free entry to the neighbourhood; the Glass Museum and the individual shops have their own tickets and opening hours.
