580 metres of arcade and 150 stalls; the name comes from a black gate that no longer exists.

Under the arcade the fish stalls open straight onto the street and some fry and grill right there in front, so you eat standing up between one crate of ice and the next. The shops are wholesale and retail at the same time: next to the tourist with a skewer is the cook buying for their restaurant. The first stalls raise their shutters at seven.

The market came into being in 1822–23 around Enmyō-ji, where merchants brought fish from Sakai and from Kii province: the temple gate was black, and that is where the name comes from. The temple is gone; the name remains. In Osaka they call it the city's kitchen.

ℹ️ The arcade is a public street. Opening hours are those of the individual stalls: some open at 7:00, most at 8:00 or 9:00. Many also open on Sundays, but some of the fishmongers, delicatessens and long-established shops close on Sundays and public holidays. Five minutes' walk from Nippombashi Station, on the Sennichimae, Sakaisuji and Kintetsu Namba lines.
