The northernmost point of Kyoto: its French lens is identical to that of only 4 other lighthouses.

The lighthouse stands on a cliff 148 metres above the sea, at the northernmost tip of the Tango Peninsula and of the whole of Kyoto Prefecture. It has a French-made first-order lens with three flashing beams, weighing 5 tonnes: the same model is installed in only four other lighthouses in all of Japan. You cannot go up inside (it is not a ‘lighthouse open to visitors’), but you can walk freely around the base, after a steep 15–20 minute climb from the car park.

First lit on 25 December 1898, it is a national Important Cultural Property and lies within Tango-Amanohashidate-Ōe Quasi-National Park.

ℹ️ Area always accessible and free. From the car park of the 経ヶ岬園地 a steep path climbs for about 15–20 minutes to the lighthouse; a fork also leads to a viewpoint higher up. No lighting or facilities on site.
