At 1,084 m it is the second-highest lake in Japan: in winter it freezes and people fish on the ice.
Formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Haruna, the lake lies at 1,084 metres (the second highest in Japan by altitude), with a circumference of 4.8 kilometres and a maximum depth of around 14 metres. From January to March it freezes over completely, enough to hold skaters and anglers who cut holes in the ice for wakasagi perch; in the warmer months you can go out in a pedal boat with Mount Haruna in the background.
A caldera lake in the municipality of Takasaki, at the foot of Mount Haruna, a destination for outings from Tokyo because of its proximity and the view.
ℹ️ The lake is always accessible and free. Boat hire has seasonal daytime hours; ice fishing and ice skating take place from January to March, when the thickness of the ice allows.
