Opened in 1958, the year after Makino's death: today it grows 3,000 species in his memory.
Dedicated to the botanist Makino Tomitarō, who was born in this prefecture and is regarded as the father of Japanese plant taxonomy, the garden opened in 1958, the year after his death. On 17.8 hectares of Godaisan hill it grows about 3,000 plant species; the archive of the museum on site holds about 300,000 herbarium specimens from Japan and abroad, plus 58,000 books and personal belongings of Makino. The main building of the memorial museum, from 1999, is by the architect Naitō Hiroshi.
On Godaisan hill, next to Chikurin-ji, it also includes a greenhouse, an area devoted to the cold orchids of Tosa and a ‘Tosa ecological garden’ that recreates the natural habitats of the prefecture.
