The polka-dot tulips of Kusama, born in Matsumoto in 1929, welcome you at the museum entrance.
On the entrance lawn, Yayoi Kusama's sculpture ‘Phantom Flower’ (2002) plants polka-dot tulips several metres tall; inside, the galleries hold one of the most substantial collections in the world devoted to the artist, who was born in Matsumoto on 22 March 1929 and is still among the most highly valued artists in contemporary art.
Opened in April 2002 as a municipal art museum, in a glass-and-wood building designed to open onto the lawn in front. The most visited permanent gallery is devoted to Yayoi Kusama, of whom the museum holds one of the largest collections in the world, alongside temporary exhibitions on local and national artists.
ℹ️ Open 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed on Mondays (the following weekday if Monday is a public holiday) and over the year-end and New Year period. Permanent collection: 800 yen (400 yen university students, 700/350 with an e-ticket), free for high school students and younger, and for Matsumoto residents over 70.
