80% of I.M. Pei's building is underground: it opens for only a few weeks each season.
Designed by I.M. Pei, the architect of the Louvre pyramid, the museum hides 80% of its volume under the hill so as not to alter the landscape, drawing on the Chinese tale of the ‘Peach Blossom Spring’: a curved tunnel and a suspension bridge lead up to the entrance, before the building reveals itself. Inside, more than two thousand works range from ancient Egypt to Greece, from Rome to Gandhara, to China and Japan. The museum is not open all year: in 2026, for example, it reopens only from 26 September to 6 December, for the seasonal exhibition.
Art museum in Kōka, founded by the Shinji Shūmeikai religion, in the Shigaraki countryside.
ℹ️ Open only for limited periods tied to the seasonal exhibitions: check the calendar on the official website (miho.jp) before planning your visit. Daily opening hours and ticket price have not been verified precisely.
