Since 12 December 2022 it has been the first Japanese tower to be declared a cultural property.
The tower is planted inside Hisaya-odori Park, and you walk right through it: its four legs rest on the lawn and people pass underneath. You buy the ticket on the ground floor, the lift goes up to ninety metres and a ramp leads to the open-air balcony at a hundred. Anyone who wants to can walk down: 393 steps.
Completed on 20 June 1954 to a design by Naitō Tachū, the engineer who a few years later would design Tokyo Tower, it is the first Japanese tower built to broadcast television. The national register lists it as 178.7 metres tall, with 35 metres between one leg and the next. Listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005, on 12 December 2022 it became 重要文化財, that is, a cultural property of national importance: the first tower in the country to receive this designation. The enclosed observation deck, Sky Deck, is at 90 metres, and the open-air Sky Balcony, added in 1968, is at 100. Since 2020 the fourth and fifth floors have been a hotel, THE TOWER HOTEL NAGOYA.
ℹ️ Open 10:00–21:00, on Saturdays until 21:40, last entry twenty minutes before; it never closes, except for a couple of days a year for maintenance. Adults 1,300 yen, elementary and junior high school 800, preschoolers free. The hours let you stay up there from daylight until the city lights up, without coming back down. The balcony at 100 metres is open-air, and you can feel the wind up there. ⚠️ Between 2026 and 2032 the structure is being repainted, for the first time in fourteen years: before you go, it is worth checking whether there is scaffolding.
