In 1532 a samurai is said to have killed a serpent at the Jaō-ike pond, at the foot of the mountain.
The trail climbs through the woods of Asaminami and Asakita, on the border between the two wards, up to the 586-metre summit. At the foot of the mountain lies the Jaō-ike pond, and legend has it that in 1532 the samurai Kagawa Katsuo killed a great serpent there. The most frequently cited route starts from JR Kami-yagi Station and climbs for about two hours.
Mount Abu, 586.4 metres, straddles Asaminami-ku and Asakita-ku. An official municipal page on the Yagi hiking trail tells the legend of the samurai Kagawa Katsuo, who in 1532 is said to have killed a great serpent at Jaō-ike pond, at the foot of the mountain. Several trails climb to the summit from different directions, often linking up with nearby Mount Gongen.
ℹ️ No opening hours or ticket: it is an open mountain route. From JR Kami-yagi, one of the routes cited climbs in about 30 minutes to the trailhead and in about 2 hours to the summit of Mount Abu, with another hour to Mount Gongen; a different variant, from the Kuwanohara-bashi bus stop, goes up in 40 minutes and down in 30. No official source states which route is the most convenient or the most walked.
