585 drawings by a miner: in 2011, Japan's first UNESCO Memory of the World entry.
If you visit the museum, built on the site of the former Mitsui Tagawa mine (Ita shaft), you walk past the two twin chimneys preserved in the park before reaching the Yamamoto Sakubei Collection: 585 drawings, 6 diaries and 36 notebooks and manuscripts (627 items in all) with which the former miner Yamamoto Sakubei documented life in the coal mines. On 25 May 2011 the collection became Japan's first inscription on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, the programme that protects documents and archives of world historical importance.
The museum is in Tagawa, on the site of the former Mitsui Tagawa mine (Ita shaft): it opened in 1983 as a documentation centre and became a museum in 2005.
