Iruma makes Sayama tea, one of Japan's ‘three great teas’ along with Uji and Shizuoka.
The museum, whose name ALIT stands for Art, Library, Information, Tea, tells the history of tea through a permanent section devoted to Sayama tea, celebrated in an old pickers' song: ‘the colour is Shizuoka's, the fragrance Uji's, the flavour is decided by Sayama’. The leaves, grown in a colder climate than the other two areas, stay fleshier and are processed with a distinctive firing called sayama-bi-ire.

ℹ️ The museum shop sells the ‘irumanjū’, the sweet invented in the crossover, which the municipality of Iruma then made for real from 2014, now reworked with Sayama tea in the filling.
