The cabin of the Hosokawa ship, moved from the castle in 2016–18; 400 yen.
On the first floor you enter the hall of the Hanashimaru, the ship in which the Hosokawa lords travelled for the sankin-kōtai, the obligation to alternate years between their own domain and Edo: the lord's cabin remains, moved here from the castle keep in 2016–18. Outside is a type 9600 steam locomotive that ran for over thirty years on the Hōhi Line.
The city museum began in 1952 in the former headquarters of the Sixth Division, with a section of historical documents in the Udo keep of the castle. Since 1 April 1978 it has been in the present building, closed for renovation and reopened on 1 December 2018. The first floor (twenty-three rooms) tells the story of Kumamoto from the Palaeolithic onwards, with rooms on Katō Kiyomasa, on the ‘military city’ and the war, on an old station and on the castle ruins; the second floor shows nature, geology and the 2016 earthquake. The planetarium has 170 seats. The Hanashimaru (波奈之丸) was built for the sankin-kōtai journeys of the Hosokawa; the lord's cabin, which survives, was moved from the castle keep between 2016 and 2018. The locomotive displayed outside, type 9600, number 69665, ran from 1940 on the Hōhi Line.
ℹ️ Open 9:00–17:00 (entry until 16:30), closed on Mondays (the day after, if a public holiday), from 29 December to 3 January and during maintenance periods. Ticket 400 yen for adults, 300 for high school and university students, 200 up to junior high; the planetarium costs extra, 200 yen for adults, and also requires the museum ticket (shows of about 50 minutes, with a weekly schedule on the site). After the earthquake of 28/07/2026 the museum was closed for checks and reopened on 04/08/2026 (museum notice); the municipal list of 02/10/2026 shows it as open. The finds from the Saizon tomb (才園古墳), a national Important Cultural Property, have been off display since 06/05/2025, with no return date. It has no car park of its own: the nearest is the paid Sannomaru car park. From the tram you get off at 杉塘 (Sugitō), 5 minutes on foot; the castle circular bus しろめぐりん is suspended indefinitely; from Sakuramachi or the city hall 15 minutes on foot. The entrance is on the north side.
