Japan Tobacco's museum: one floor on salt, one on tobacco; 300 yen, closed Mondays.
The museum of the manufacturer Japan Tobacco devotes one floor to salt, from the salt pan to everyday use, with blocks of rock salt from different parts of the world, and one to the history of the pipe and the cigarette around the world, with pieces from every continent. It is far from the stations, ten to twelve minutes on foot, in an area of warehouses and apartment blocks.
The museum, run by the tobacco manufacturer Japan Tobacco (the former state salt and tobacco monopoly), devotes one floor to salt and one to the history of the pipe and the cigarette around the world. It moved here, to Yokokawa, from earlier premises in Shibuya (the year of the move differs between the sources read, 2013 or 2015). The collection numbers about 30,000 pieces according to the Japanese Wikipedia, but the official collections page states about 36,000: two sources, two different numbers, neither obviously wrong.
ℹ️ Open 10:00–17:00, last entry 16:30 (official site, tabashio.jp); closed on Mondays (the next weekday if it is a public holiday), over the New Year period and on any extraordinary closures published on the site (for example 30/6–3/7 in a recent year). Ticket 300 yen adults and university students, 100 yen up to high school. 10–12 minutes on foot from the nearest station: this must be counted in the travel time, not only the visit time.
