20,000 sq m dug over 70 years (1919–1986): during the war it was a secret fighter-plane factory.
The quarry, 140×150 m and up to 60 m deep, was dug to extract building stone from 1919 to 1986 (about 10 million blocks). During the war it was used as a secret army depot and as a workshop for the Nakajima Ki-84 ‘Hayate’ fighter. The temperature stays at around 8°C all year. It is a separate place, by protocol and physically, from the Ōya-ji temple (大谷寺, added here as a new entry), which lies about 1.5 km further south and has a religious history of its own.
A huge underground quarry of Ōya tuff, now open to visitors.
ℹ️ The temperature stays at around 10 °C even in summer.
