Japan's only public museum devoted solely to photography: 39,135 works in the collection (2026).
The three galleries (on the third floor, the second floor and in the basement) host around fifteen exhibitions a year in rotation, from a collection of almost 40,000 works. On the fourth floor a reading room holds more than 36,000 photography books; on the ground floor a 190-seat hall screens film seasons. A covered walkway links it to Ebisu Station, handy on rainy days.
The museum opened in its current form in January 1995 inside Ebisu Garden Place, and is the only public museum in Japan devoted entirely to photography and video. It is an institution of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government; the collection numbers 39,135 works (April 2026 figure).
ℹ️ Open 10:00–18:00 (Thursdays and Fridays until 20:00), closed on Mondays. The ticket price varies by exhibition: there is no single price for ‘the whole museum’, and part of the permanent exhibition is free. A covered walkway links it to Ebisu Station.
