Here the sand sings even in damp weather: outside, on the beach, it is silent. ¥290.
At the test bench the sand is kept dry, and it sounds even on days when it is raining outside: that is the practical reason to go in. At the microscopes you look closely at what it is made of (quartz and tiny shells), and a display case holds what the currents bring to this beach from half the world, which is another story, and a less cheerful one.
A municipal museum devoted to the phenomenon of sounding sand, built a few steps from Kotohikihama Beach. It displays sand samples, optical instruments for examining its composition and a collection of washed-up rubbish.
ℹ️ Open from 9:00 to 17:00; ¥290 for adults, ¥90 for elementary and junior high school students, ¥190 per head from fifteen upwards. Free car park for thirty cars and three coaches. It is the stop that saves the day when the beach is damp and does not sing, and it is a few steps from the beach. ⚠️ The Tuesday closure and the year-end closure are stated on the museum's website, but the official area page does not mention them: before going on a Tuesday, it is worth phoning.
