42 real trains on display, plus a 23x10-metre model railway on the second floor.
Run by JR East, it displays 42 historic vehicles between the indoor ‘Train Station’ and the outdoor area, from the first Japanese steam locomotive to the bullet trains. On the second floor of the main building an HO-scale model railway measuring 23x10 metres reproduces the Japanese rail network in miniature. There is a real driving simulator (separate ticket and lottery) and a panoramic restaurant overlooking the tracks of the Tōhoku Line.
Opened in 2007 next to Ōmiya Station, a historic hub of Japan's railway workshops since the Meiji era, the museum can be reached on the New Shuttle to its dedicated station, ‘Tetsudō-Hakubutsukan’.
ℹ️ Open 10:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. Closed on Mondays and at New Year. An adult ticket costs about 1,500–1,600 yen, depending on how you buy it; there are rates for groups of at least 20 people. Online booking recommended at weekends.
