Japan's fourth national museum, since 2005: the only one of the four devoted to history.
If you visit the Kyushu National Museum, opened on 16 October 2005, you enter Japan's fourth national museum, after those of Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara, and the only one of the four devoted to history (that is, to the formation of Japanese culture from an Asian perspective) rather than to art. A ‘rainbow tunnel’ links it to Dazaifu Tenmangu, a walk of about ten minutes.
The museum is in Dazaifu, next to Dazaifu Tenmangu. Its collection includes the bell of Kannon Temple, designated a National Treasure (国宝).
ℹ️ Hours 9:30–17:00 (until 19:00 in some periods), closed on Mondays.
