It was the target on 9 August 1945: three attempts in 50 minutes, saved by the smoke.
The museum stands in Katsuyama Park, on the site of the old Kokura army arsenal: that was the target of the second atomic bomb, on 9 August 1945. Clouds and the smoke from a raid by 224 B-29s on Yahata the evening before covered about 70% of the area and prevented the crew from seeing the target on three passes, lasting 50 minutes in all. Short of fuel, the crew diverted to the secondary target city, Nagasaki.
The museum opened on 19 April 2022 in Katsuyama Park, in Kokura Kita-ku, Kitakyushu, on the site of the defunct Japanese army arsenal. The park holds a replica of the Nagasaki peace bell, donated by the city of Nagasaki in 1973, the focus of a memorial ceremony held every 9 August.
