The first of the eight shrines of Ryukyu: excavations here have found Chinese Ming coins.
The shrine stands on a white cliff above Naminoue beach, ten minutes from the airport: you arrive among the buildings of Naha and find the open sea in front of you. It is the highest in rank among the 琉球八社, the eight principal shrines of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and it grew out of the cult of ニライカナイ: in Ryukyuan cosmology, the divine realm beyond the horizon from which the sea gods and the harvest come. Excavations at the site have yielded pottery fragments from the shell mound period and coins from the Chinese Ming dynasty, a sign of religious use going back centuries, even before the present shrine.
Dedicated to the sea deities of the Nirai Kanai cult, it was the point from which the Ryukyu Kingdom looked towards Japan and China for maritime trade. Naha residents affectionately call it ‘Nanmin-san’.
ℹ️ The shrine grounds are always open and free. Prayer services (御祈祷) are available 10:00–15:30; the offices and the sale of amulets keep to the hours 9:00–16:45. In May the なんみん祭 festival is held, with children's sumo, Ryukyuan dance, karate and a tug of war on the beach below (the exact date has not been checked).
