The largest free-flight aviaries in Japan: birds, red pandas, sand cats.
An open-air zoo where the relationship between visitor and animal is designed the opposite way round from usual: the aviaries, the largest in Japan of this type, let the birds fly free in wide spaces instead of behind bars. Among the animals it houses are red pandas and sand cats (among the smallest felines in the world), and a small narrow-gauge train carries visitors between the areas of the park.
A zoological and ornithological park in the city of Nago, northern Okinawa. Open all year round, it focuses on the ‘flying cage’ model for the bird section and on species that are uncommon in Japanese zoos, such as the sand cat.
ℹ️ Hours given by the most recent page consulted: 9:30–17:30, last entry 17:00 (source: rurubu.jp, not official but a reliable aggregator). ⚠️ PREZZO_IGNOTO: the secondary sources strongly disagree: ¥1,300 on one page, ¥900 on another, which however states that it was last updated on 28/10/2022, and a third page reports a fare revision announced by the park itself for 1 October 2025, with seasonal prices between ¥1,600 and ¥1,800, plus a new discount for Nago residents. The official site (neopark.co.jp) could not be reached in this session because of a connection error, tried four times on three different URLs (homepage, fare revision page, prices page): I could not resolve the contradiction by opening the primary source. The price must NOT be written as a measurement until someone manages to open neopark.co.jp.
