7 km of cherry trees planted from 1916: 100,000 visitors in the first week of May.

A 7 km straight road, exactly twenty ken wide (about 36 metres, hence the name), lined with more than 2,000 mountain cherry trees (エゾヤマザクラ) that are now a century old, with the Hidaka mountains in the background. At blossom time, in the first week of May, about 100,000 visitors arrive from all over Japan.

The road was laid out in 1872 (Meiji 5) on the initiative of Kuroda Kiyotaka as an inspection route to the former imperial stock farm in the area. Between 1916 and 1918 mountain cherry trees from the nearby hills were transplanted along it (today many of them are a century old). It is included among the ‘hundred best roads of Japan’ and the ‘hundred cherry tree spots of Japan’, and it is a Hokkaido Heritage site (北海道遺産).

ℹ️ Public road, always accessible. The blossom, and with it most of the crowds, typically falls in the first ten days of May: the exact period varies with the season and should be checked year by year.
